Hiking in the Estérel: The best trails starting from Le Trayas

Sea view from the garden terrace of the CAP NEREE 225 apartment in Le Trayas

The Esterel Massif is a unique geological gem in France. This volcanic massif offers a breathtaking spectacle where the vibrant red of the porphyry rock blends with the tender green of the maquis shrubland and the endless blue of the Mediterranean. The great privilege of staying at Cap Nérée, in the heart of Le Trayas, is being at the immediate starting point of the most beautiful hiking trails on the French Riviera. Here, forget the hassles of cars and parking: adventure begins at the end of the driveway.

Whether you are a contemplative walker or a seasoned hiker, here is our selection of must-see routes to explore the wild Estérel.

1. Bear Peak: The unmissable 360° panorama

This is the area’s signature hike. From the small Trayas train station, located a stone’s throw from the residence, a path climbs steeply through maritime pines, strawberry trees, and flowering heather. The ascent, sometimes challenging but manageable, leads you to the summit of Pic de l’Ours (492 meters), recognizable by its telecommunications antenna.

  • The reward: Reaching the summit, the view is magnificent. You enjoy an absolute panoramic view of the entire Bay of Cannes, the Lérins Islands, the often snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps on one side, and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez on the other.

  • Practical information: Loop of approximately 2h30, moderate level.

2. Cap Roux and its Saint-Pilon: In the heart of the red rock

If you only have time for one hike to experience the “Grand Canyon” atmosphere, choose the summit of Cap Roux. The trail winds its way through spectacular red stone monoliths and ancient caves, such as the cave of the hermit Saint-Honorat.

  • Local tip: The orientation table at the summit offers a breathtaking, sweeping view of the Corniche d’Or. We highly recommend doing this hike early in the morning during the summer: the low-angled sunlight sets the volcanic rock ablaze, and the silence is almost reverent.

  • Practical information: Loop of approximately 3 hours, medium level.

3. The Coastal Path: A family walk along the water

For a more relaxed day out or an afternoon stroll, the Coastal Path (formerly the customs officers’ path) is ideal. This flat trail runs alongside coves and rocky headlands, close to the waves. It allows you to discover the maritime history of the coast while enjoying the sea spray.

🥾 Absolute comfort after exertion

After hiking the eucalyptus-scented trails and admiring the peaks of the Estérel mountains, treat yourself to the ultimate reward. Take off your hiking boots and dive straight into the cool waters of our infinity pool suspended above the sea, or relax on the sun loungers on the terrace and contemplate the peaks you’ve just climbed.
